Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

ostralyc [ost-RAL-eesh] - Australian (adjective) :)
When I get a moment I'll go hunt down the (paltry few) words I've coined for the Bible project and stick them over here as well.

Re: Plural form of word

I'm not an expert, but it's not a hard question: yes, you're right. (Also - Vode rather than Vods ;) ) Generally if it ends in a vowel anyway you pluralize by adding -se, and if it ends in a consonant you pluralize by adding -e. Oh - to get specific translation requests noticed faster, try putting t...

Oookay, thanks for clarifying that... sorry I asked, since there are clearly strong feelings on the topic.

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

Eh... yes, sorry about that.
Okay, real question: how do y'all interpret the sixth of the Resol'nare, 'Ke’shekemi haar Mand’alor'? I mean, I'm assuming there isn't an actual Mand'alor...? Unless it's Kar'buir?

Re: Hopefully I can help: A Discussion Thread

Seem to recall you really only need cuy if you're using it as an affirmation of her existence - if in context of 'she is pretty' or 'she is brave' you'd say 'Kaysh mesh'la' or 'Kaysh kotep', rather than 'Kaysh cuy (predicate)'

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

Oh... *heh heh*... yes. A lot of my IRL friends are Roman Catholic, but I'm definitely Protestant and mostly Baptist. I don't make a huge secret out of it or anything - I'm mostly 'living' in a very secular environment, and people who know me know I'm the nerd who goes often to Bible study and rarel...

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

No midi-chlorians, you can't be a Jedi - well, by Old Temple rules, certainly. But it's not in Code, it's just a thing that came up, kinda like infant baptism and the hardcore Mariolatry in the Roman Catholic church. It makes sense, ('from a certain point of view') but it's not included in the sourc...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Whyyy must all the words for 'holy' be sarcastic in tone??? Osik'la miit-pitat'kurs (horrible word-jungle) follows. I've about had a gutsful of Gabriel and I want to get out of this section, so I've made a word for 'born' to save myself time later. The word is ru'jorteh'yaiir, 'brought from the wom...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Joseph, Mary, Jesus, and David just about unrecognizable - I'm trying to get them so that a 'Mandalorian' Mando'ad reading this would pronounce them the same as people hereabouts do, but that may sound weird to American ears. Feel free to tell me a better way. 'Highly favored' - argh. I've mangled T...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

So... ru'haa'banar? It kind of bleaches out the poeticism of the language, but if it helps comprehension I guess it's worth it.

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

'Favor' in the usual Biblical sense was tricky, and we could probably use an 'among' because I've had to find all sorts of sneaky ways around using that whole concept. And 'wonder', and 'realize'. Do Mando'ade not follow normal this-world thought processes? Really happy to find gaan'joha, but pretty...

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

I think - I hope that was what I was trying to say. That in both cases it's less about the genetics and - ahem - microscopic symbionts - than about just getting on with living the life.
Thanks for saying it better.

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

'lek, vor'e, Vlet. Well, there's nothing in the Code itself that says a Jedi must have a certain concentration of midi-chlorians. Given the age I started this, I'm probably less SWTOR-orthodox than pushing the inner limit of Altistian , but I follow the Code to the best of my ability, so I call myse...

Re: Mando Skraan and Recipes

Was just thinking about this again yesterday - one of my vode was making spring rolls - RICE FLOUR!!! You know how you can get rice noodles in the supermarket, they're see-through, and they're see-through- er when you soak them ready to use? But you can eat them without soaking if you really feel li...

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

As a Jedi of Mando heritage - rather than specifically and deliberately a Mando'ad - believe me I get people saying my lifestyle and beliefs are osik. That said, I'm also not in America. I don't know how uptight people are over there. Re. 'it's from Star Wars' - so what? There are people who sort th...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

This part was fun; it's thick with religious terminology. Resorted to Tal'jair as necessary. My turn to make up some words: uja hettipurg is unwieldy, so I've contracted it to 'ujettipurg' which it actually kind of sounds like already (at least in my Coruscant accent). Dayn yam for outside ditto, so...

Re: Mando Skraan and Recipes

You'd need to use amazingly high-gluten flour to have a chance at getting it that thin without tearing - but yeah, it would be see-through until you baked it. I suspect the basic idea is matzah, possibly matzah with stuff in it to make it more nutritious. And I think uj'alayi as described sounds an ...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Cool, thanks, I've altered that. Kind of hard to tell what's literal and what's not - guess it's the same with any language. Verses 5-9... this is slow because I've got a whole ori'bines of assignments just now. I've had to resort to using Tal'jair's expanded dictionary as well. (Which reminds me, I...
