Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

Stuff that showed up in the course of a translation project: Coined ‘swoops’ as follows: sen – low + kih – small + diryc – ship = senkih'diryc, swoop-bike. Coined an adjectival 'own', as in, 'my own two hands': ganyc, from 'ganar', to own, and the adjectival suffix -yc. 'Secrecy', ranov'lur, 'ranov-...

Re: List of Custom Words

Pardon me if I'm being dense (it's pretty late in this time zone) but what the unholy hell do we need 'mummification' for??
I mean, the etymology makes sense, I just can't see where you'd use it.

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Literal translation, and/or a note saying what version of the Bible you're using, would be nice if you can manage it, please!
(e) - in this case it's kaysh, because it's one person that's being sent away.

I'm sorry for your loss, vod. Without knowing you or your stepdad, I can only offer this. O’r ibic aay’han, ni partaylir gar. Par ner ular, vor entye. Par ner cyare, ni yaimpir cyare. Re: Mando'ade Games

I'm absolutely on board with Aarlaya's idea of pulling in Maori-culture games - ayyyyy Tem Morrison! Ti Rakua - some are analogous to clapping games, yes, literally chucking sticks at each other in specific patterns. There's one that takes a stack of long poles and a lot of people, which is good for...

Re: Reading Mando'a

Just a general PSA - I haven't heard any of the audiobooks, I'm just going based on instinct and pronunciation guides, so take it as 'Naboo accent' if you're feeling kind, or 'Belandrie jurkadir sha Mando'a tug'yc' if you're not. The reading-and-captioning is the easy part for me, so if anyone lacki...

Re: Reading Mando'a

Eh, I'm at college too, vod! I do this instead of having a life ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The verde here seem to be from over the world - it would be so cool if we could get a bunch of representative recordings to track how regional accents affect Mando'a pronunciation. I'm in New Zealand, which comes with the wei...

Re: The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mando'ade

Okay, vod, here goes nothing. When Taljair or Vlet get back things might get interesting. I'm not certain where most of your vocab's coming from, it doesn't seem to be in Kar'buir's original dictionary and I'm not finding it in Taljair's expanded - admittedly I'm working from an old edition. If you'...

Mando dictionary.
Dash it, Google, Mando dictionary.
Ah-ha, there it is.
Wait, there are Mando'a on this planet? Kandosii'la!

Re: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

It's here... http://forum.mandoa.org/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=34 Kensoku started on Genesis, I started on Luke, taking a slightly different approach as you'll see. It's pretty slow, and technically I'm paraphrasing, as I'm going from an NIV into Mando'a. Putting up the literal meaning of my 'translation...

Re: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

It already does, it's a nightmare. I'm working on the Bible translation project. 'Holy'? Nada. 'Angel'? You've got to be kidding. 'God'? Technically there is one but it takes about a paragraph in Mando'a to approximate three characters in English. Oh, and any form of thought-process verb? Forget it....

Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

Osik, sorry. I get lost in translation in English sometimes, let alone Mando'a. I wasn't remotely offended - local dialect just leans strongly toward dysphemism in casual settings. Okay, if it helps, here goes nothing: I'm not seeing where the suffix on your 'tranar' comes from - presumably it's a r...

https://youtu.be/5CDrHFcOF1o A short conversation in Mando'a - I used to use resources like this when I was learning French, and I found them really helpful. This kind of thing doesn't take long - the captions are the hard part - so if anyone has any brilliant ideas about other kinds of video that m...

Okay, this took more rehearsal than I care to mention, but I translated the AotC extract and got it up to nearly as fast as I usually speak.

Reading Mando'a

For pronunciation references. I've posted a couple of things to YouTube, on a throwaway, under the name 'Mando'a Miit'haataylur' (Mando'a Reader) and if anyone else wants to join the party I can make it a 'shared' YouTube account we can all contribute to. So far I've posted (at Ruus' request) Taljai...

Re: Pronunciation?

Me again. https://youtu.be/oCit0xWl53o This is a lot easier than the translation work I was doing, and I'm finding saying it out loud helps me remember the words, so I might sort of keep going sporadically. Also - this isn't strictly conversational speed, this is a lot slower than I usually talk. I ...

I kept tripping up over ashi'se for some reason, but for what it's worth... here you go.
This is unlisted, so it's no biggie to take it down if there's a problem or make it public if we think that's worthwhile.

Re: Pronunciation?

Digital necromancy strikes again... no, I did only just now find this. I'm pretty used to recording studios and hence to hearing my own voice, and I might have some free time in the next couple weeks, so I'd be happy to read some Mando'a into a microphone and stick it on YouTube - my accent's probab...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Awayyy... I've been awaaaaayyyy... nevermind, singing in type doesn't really work so well. Notes: had the idea of using Sol'tan rather than Solus to mean The One in referring to God, as it comes out about the same in English and doesn't carry the connotation of vulnerability. Using cin'petiryc as a ...
