Re: Mandalorian Writing Systems

Personally I just write Mando'a (and... most other things...) in a shorthand version of Aurebesh that I developed for taking uni notes nobody would ask to borrow. I tend to use a isk and a shen for yc sounds, so anyone trying to back-transliterate would get snarled there. Were we trying for somethin...

Re: Dedicated Translation Help Thread

Hey, guys, do we have an extra-emphatic? Like if you wanna say really fucking weird (spoilers for coarse language) you can't use ori'ori', it sounds stupid. Could I use 'laamori' or 'laam'esori', for instance? (up-very and top-very, respectively). 'Cause I want to tell someone his plan is really fuc...

Re: List of Custom Words

Digital necromancy... *sigh*. Taljair and Ge'tal, just about the mummification, it kind of raises a more far-reaching question about the whole mission here: are we trying to make a language *we can use*, or a language *Mando'ade would use*? Because if it's one we'd use, we'll naturally focus on conc...

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Heh. I use Mando'a cusswords as everyday 'swearing lite' and always forget some people can understand 'em. Your v. 6 isn't quite right... it's passive-voice in the Bible (shall be filled) but Mando'a doesn't support that (argh) so if you could clarify who's doing the filling that'd be awesome. :) Bu...

Re: Transcription of loanwords

I've been away for ages, but if it helps at all, Taljair's dictionary used to have defined pronunciations for the vowels, and I just worked phonetically off that for the Bible translation stuff I was doing (Zechariah -> Sekariya, Mary -> Meri, &c) getting a spelling that would force a Mando'a readin...

Late to the party, but I figured 'Org' was close enough. 'Ner gai Belandrie Meave, teh Aliit Org' is how I did it for the language-tutorial videos.

Re: Passive Voice, Gerunds, and Progressive Verbs

I gather Munnodol is suggesting introducing a way of indicating that a verb is passive, without rearranging the order of words. So: 'ni edeemir adate' = I bite people would be correct, but 'ni edeemir hadate' would be more accurately translated people are bitten by me . I'm not sure exactly what fun...

Re: Preposition for "By means of"?

No, that still works okay, if you consider cousins vode. Potential offense to Roman Catholics follows: I understand one of the many ways the Roman Catholic church reconciles the fact that Mary had other children (as in 'Jesus, your mother and brothers are looking for you' with their 'perpetual virgi...

Re: Preposition for "By means of"?

Completely unhelpful, all I can think of when I try saying ba'balut is the 'brown barbaloots' in The Lorax. I rather like your 'exceptionally literal' translation for ba'getet'ye - it's practical and poetic at once. Ba'buir is a bit tricky, yeah. If I may suggest a wholly usage-based rather than 'gr...

Re: Star Wars day!

Happy Star Wars day! It's almost over in my timezone. I wore my full Jedi gear on campus, and wrote 'Jate Ka'ra Akaan tuur' on every unattended whiteboard I found. Also convinced the leader of the Bible study I go to to let me do a 'comparative religions' session - comparing the Resol'nare and the J...

Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

'Moichido' is 'do it again' or 'one more time', but we use it also as 'from the top' if someone screws up halfway through a kata. I screw up -> he says 'moichido' -> I start over. I screw up -> I notice it before he does -> I mutter 'moichido' or 'tug'yc' to myself and start over. 'What the heck is ...

Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

I've taken to counting my karate reps in Mando'a, much to my teacher's confusion (tho' he did end up saying tug'yc instead of moichido today, I'm calling that a win), and can confirm - no, ra'shya does not sound even a tiny bit like rayshe'a. For one thing the emphasis is in a different place: RA-sh...

Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

Osik, sorry, got my roots mixed. Comes to the same thing, though. I'm inclined to disagree about the infinitives, because you don't say ni jorhaa'i , you say ni jorhaa'ir , suggesting that the -ir suffix isn't the infinitive, it's a finite form. (And because it's Mando'a it's present tense by defaul...
